Ambulance boat departing from Skandiahamnen
This is the ambulance boat that saved my life 3 years ago when I suffered a heart attack while living on the island of Asperö, just outside Gothenburg. It whisked me from Asperö to a waiting ambulance at Saltholmen and I was in hospital in less than one hour, all at 4 o'clock in the morning. There is now a helicopter stationed at Säve airport to do this job, but the ambulance boat is still available, probably as a back-up, serving all the southern and northern archipelagos.

Andrew, the ultimate responsibility for all Greater Gothenburg ambulances and the ambulance boat lies with the City Council, but in this case it is devolved to the main hospital, Sahlgrenska Sjukhus, which has contracted a private company called Ulfab to actually operate the boat. The same company operates the ambulances, too. There is a similar arrangement for the ambulance helicopter (see picture #3800 in the PlanesandChoppers web site). Hence these services are paid for by the taxpayer.

I know we all object to paying taxes for this that and everything else, but I agree that a service like that you mentioned should be funded by the Goverment through tax; and not through donations.
All the best Andrew.
