Lasse-Maja, ferry boat at Marstrand, West Sweden
This very interesting vessel was photographed on 7 July 2008. According to very sketchy details in Swedish, via Google, it is not really a "linfärja" which strictly speaking pulls itself along by means of a cable stretched across the banks, but is only guided by the cable, and has a propeller and rudder so that it can travel independently. The source also says that it is electrically powered, like a tram. I need to go back to Marstrand and talk to the people who run it to find out more!
Lasse-Maja was a famous Swedish criminal of the 19th century who was imprisoned in Marstrand's fortress for many years. He had often dressed as a woman to avoid being caught, but eventually was sentenced to hard labour at the fortress (Carlsten's fortress). He evn managed to avoid this because he was a good cook and did his time in the kitchens instead of breaking rocks like the other prisoners.
