Capt. Tom Meanley designed and built this boat in the back yard of his little farm in southwest Shelby County, the Memphis Queen Shipyard, in 1976-1979. The boat had to be moved over 12 miles of dry land. The Memphis Belle III was christened on May 8, 1979. She can carry 400 passengers. She is 99.8 feet long and 27 feet wide. Her true paddlewheel is powered by a diesel engine with additional twin screws.
